Using a pro-active approach to mouth care may help maintain strong teeth for life.

Most people are aware of the importance of daily tooth brushing and flossing as well as regular dental visits, but there are other routines that may help maintain a healthy mouth for life. A healthy mouth doesn’t mean just healthy teeth. Gum care is essential in maintaining healthy teeth. Other than the recommended brushing and flossing at least twice a day and visiting your dentist for cleanings every six months, following these additional tips will help you to maintain a healthy mouth.

Supplements

The American Academy of Periodontology states in the article “Low Dietary Vitamin C Can Increase Risk for Periodontal Disease," that Vitamin C helps to maintain healthy connective tissue. People lacking in Vitamin C in their diets are at a higher risk of developing gingivitis than those taking the recommended daily dosage (60 mg. per day). Ideally, take in Vitamin C through your diet rather than supplements, but be careful consuming citrus fruits as excessive acid may damage tooth enamel. Consider using a straw for drinking fruit juices.

Coenzyme Q10 is a naturally occurring substance in the body which assists with cell function. However, some people naturally produce low levels while taking certain medications may lower levels of CoQ10. Supplementing your diet with CoQ10 may help to maintain healthier gums. Toothpastes which contain CoQ10 are also available and have been shown to improve gum health.

Calcium is an important nutrient for healthy teeth and bones, but in some cases calcium absorption is difficult. The herb Horsetail contains silica, a nutrient which assists with mineral absorption into bones. It has been shown to help heal fractures as well as possibly help heal tooth decay and Horsetail taken in conjunction with calcium will help your teeth and bones to absorb the calcium better.

Mouth Cleaning Methods

Hydrogen Peroxide may be used as a mouth rinse to decrease bacteria. Mix equal parts Hydrogen Peroxide and water, then swish in the mouth for one minute and spit out. Be sure to use the 3% Hydrogen Peroxide solution when using for a mouth rinse.

Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic healing therapy used to help the body heal from various illnesses - and also used to clean the teeth. Best done on an empty stomach, place 1 Tbsp. of either cold-pressed sesame oil or sunflower oil into your mouth in the morning before eating or drinking anything. Swish in your mouth - as though you are chewing the oil – for 15 minutes until the oil becomes thin and watery. Spit the remaining oil from your mouth into the toilet. Oil pulling pulls toxins from the tissues and helps clean the mouth and gums, also whitening the teeth.

These two mouth cleaning methods do not need to be done together, but instead may be alternated according to your preference.

As a safety precaution, check with your health care professional before taking any nutritional supplements and remember to visit your dentist for cleanings every six months.
